What Successful People Do

This week we are focusing on a quote by Brian Tracy, Canadian-American author, and public speaker.  Mr. Tracy has written over 80 books and had helped lead many people to the road to success.   Here is what Tracy says about success:

"Successful people are always looking for opportunities to help others.  Unsuccessful people are always asking 'What's in it for me?'"

Have you ever noticed that you never have to teach a child to be selfish? They naturally think that they should have whatever they want, whenever they want it.  And, when they don't get what they want, their tendency can be pouting, crying, or throwing a fit. Selfishness comes naturally, therefore we have to teach, train, and work at becoming unselfish. When we do not work towards being unselfish, we can be left in the child-like state where we think the whole world should revolve around our needs and wants.

You've probably met a few people like this before, right?  The conversation always turns back to them.  If they are directly benefitted, they have little to no interest.  And, they seem to lack compassion or empathy for others around them.  It is these people, Brian Tracy says, are the people who will never reach success.

Can these folks have a lot of money? Sure.

Can they have positions of power or authority? Sometimes.

But real success will never be felt by people who can only focus on themselves.

Why is this?  Because of a simple law that has stood the test of time: The Law Of The Harvest.   The Law Of The Harvest says that you will reap what you sow.  Growing up in rural Indiana, I was raised on the Law Of The Harvest.  If you did not plant the corn seeds and the soybean seeds, you would be highly disappointed come harvest time.

Let's take this principle and apply it to Tracy's quote for today.  Successful people look for opportunities to help others.  This means that they practice both awareness of others' needs and empathy or desire to act upon the awareness that they have.  They are able to set aside the self-desires they have to become aware of the desires of others.  This awareness and action is so drastically different than the norm (remember, most people have not trained themselves out of the gravitational pull towards selfishness) that those they come in contact with are deeply impacted. When you impact people in this way, they become your catalyst for success. They want to support you, encourage you, and build opportunities to see you thrive. Consequently, if the seeds you plant are consistently only in the areas that benefit you, people will also notice this too.

As humans who want to live successful lives and business owners who want to thrive in what they do, it is important to invest in the lives of those around you.  Take a few minutes every day to stop and look on Facebook for those who might need some encouragement.  Send a note to someone who is lonely.  Share a coffee and advice with someone who is just starting off and needing a little guidance. Planting the seeds of thoughtfulness and kindness will lead you to reap a harvest of gratitude and recognition.
